Ivica Dacic says Tomislav Nikolic's huger strike to force early elections was "a self-destructive game and therefore nobody can be considered the winner". In an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Blic, the SPS party leader and deputy PM said that the relations between his party and Boris Tadic's Democrats (DS) were "very correct", but that a new post-election coalition, this time between Nikolic's SNS and DS would be "absolutely legitimate and realistic". Nikolic's hunger strike "helped ruling party" Dacic assessed that Nikolic's position has been strengthened among his voters, but that at the same time, "the whole political movement suffered significant loss since such a strike is not a recognizable way of political struggle. Especially if we have in mind that it is not clear to the citizens what actually Nikolic was fighting for - elections now, or in December." "The Democrats gained when homogenization of their voters is concerned. I even think that DS has gained more than SNS. Also, Tadic's moves were such that they have additionally strengthened his leadership. He demonstrated that nobody can blackmail him especially when interests of the country are concerned. I would, however, point out that your two questions indicate the essence of the problem which is positioning of the DS and SNS," noted Dacic. "Both Tadic and Nikolic were in Brussels," he continued. "They both said to support the EU integration, they both think it is important that we get a candidate status and the date for beginning of negotiations. However, they both could hear from and set questions to the Europeans if it is better for elections to be held in December or January. If they both have talked with the same people in Brussels, then they have either not understood them properly or they have been told different things." "Tadic told me that the stance of the Europeans is that for the sake of success of our candidacy it would be better that the elections are called after making of the final decision, i.e. that they are called in December. After they are called, they can be held within 160 days. So it is realistic that the elections are held on January 15. If Tadic was told so, does Nikolic was told the same? This whole matter is in Tadic-Nikolic-Brussels triangle and there the solution should be looked for," Dacic told the newspaper, adding that his Socialists will "accept any agreement they reach".
