EU watches Serbia developments "with concern" "We followed the development of the situation in Serbia this weekend with growing concern," Maja Kocijancic said in a statement for the press. "Political differences must be resolved within the established political process, and the EU will carefully follow how the situation develops," she said. Kocijancic said that "Serbia has set high goals for itself this year when it comes to European integration," but "it is yet to meet them." "Complete dedication to the necessary reforms and obligations that were undertaken is required. Only a stable political environment can ensure this," she noted. Kocijancic reminded that the EU does not have a fixed timeframe for Serbia's EU integration, and that it will make the decisions only "once it estimates that Serbia is ready." Serbian President and ruling DS party chief Boris Tadic has said he would call early elections in the country once it was given EU candidate status, but opposition SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic wants the date to be set earlier and has embarked on a hunger strike in order to achieve this.
