Democratic Party (DS) and Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leaders Boris Tadic and Tomislav Nikolic did not reach an agreement on elections, B92 has learned. Tadic and Nikolic had a meeting last night. DS, SNS leaders fail to agree on elections SNS deputy leader Aleksandar Vucic has stated that Tadic was the one who called the meeting. Vucic told B92 that the Progressives would therefore hold a rally on April 16 in Belgrade as planned. He did not want to say what the SNS and the DS leaders discussed at the meeting. The meeting was held away from the public eye and neither the DS nor the SNS wanted to talk about the details afterwards. B92 has learned that Nikolic and Tadic did not reach an agreement on early parliamentary elections. “They talked about calling early elections and situation in Serbia, but no progress was made unfortunately. The SNS has already made enough compromises, it has offered plenty but the regime representatives did not show understanding and we’ve got nothing left to do than to fight for justice and different and better future together with the people,” the SNS deputy leader stressed. B92 sources claim that Nikolic repeated that the elections should be held after decision about Serbia’s EU candidate status by the end of the year and demanded to discuss a date that would be acceptable to all parties. Tadic, however, pointed out that Serbia should not miss an opportunity to get the EU candidate status and that early parliamentary elections should be discussed once Serbia had achieved the goal. The meeting between the SNS and the DS leaders followed after several week-long exchange of harsh statements. The government mostly criticized Nikolic for his statement that “the Progressives will try to find a solution another way” if their proposal to hold the elections on December 18 was rejected. On the other hand, the SNS has denied DS’ allegations that preparation for the opposition rally represents a threat to the country’s legal system.
