Serbian Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic on Wednesday in Belgrade met with heads of parliamentary groups. According to her statement, officials said that the date of staging parliamentary elections is a marginal topic and that a much more important issue for Serbia refers to the completion of all necessary preparations so that the country could obtain EU candidate status by the end of the year. Speaker: Date of elections marginal topic The question as to whether the elections would take pace in December or in spring 2012 is a matter of agreement or assessment, and we concluded at the meeting that there are much more important tasks for us to tackle as the government and the parliament, Djukic-Dejanovic told reporters following the meeting. The parliament speaker said that Serbian President Boris Tadic is not "deaf to all requests" regarding the calling of elections but this point is regulated by documents which envisage that the president should decide on this matter. Tadic's ruling DS-led coalition parliament group chief Nada Kolundzija said that the "game" related to the issue of calling elections is inappropriate considering the period Serbia is currently going through and the tasks which the country is yet to face. Opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) has called a rally for Saturday in Belgrade, that will ask the authorities to call early elections. Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic
