Serbian President Boris Tadic met in Kuwait Sunday with Emir Sheikh Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He also had meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and National Assembly Speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi. Tadic meets with Kuwait emir, prime minister “Welcome to Kuwait”, the Emir warmly welcomed the president of Serbia in the magnificent palace which reflects the richness of this small Arab state, which has one tenth of entire world's oil reserves, has a gross domestic product of USD 138.6bn and per capita income of USD 55,300. Tadic thanked the emir on Kuwait's consistent policy when it comes to Kosovo because the country has not recognized the unilaterally proclaimed independence of the southern Serbian province. The focus of Tadic's two-day visit is on improving economic cooperation, which lags behind the excellent political relations between the two countries, and is characterized by a modest trade which last year amounted to only USD 1.3mn. After the meeting between the delegations of Serbia and Kuwait, four intergovernmental agreements were signed in the emir's palace, including a particularly interesting memorandum of understanding in the field of defense. The document was signed by Serbian Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac and his Kuwait counterpart, and the Serbian minister announced earlier the signing would signify a “new step” towards getting the job for the overhaul of a total of 149 M-84 army tanks which Kuwait bought from the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ) in the early 1990's. Serbian Economy Minister Nebojsa Ciric signed a trade agreement, and the remaining two agreements, on air services and on abolishing visas for diplomatic and official passports, were signed on behalf of Serbia by Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. The Serbian president will take part in a Kuwait-Serbia business forum on Monday, a chance to look into opportunities for promoting economic cooperation and investment. Based on the current conclusions from the meetings between the officials and businessmen of the two countries, Kuwait is interested in investing in the road and railway infrastructure in Serbia, especially in the second phase of the construction of the Prokop railway station in Belgrade and in the building of motorways in Serbia. On the other hand, Kuwait also expects Serbian companies to participate in various projects to be carried out in Kuwait over the next four years under the plan for the development of the country.
