New Kosovo Alliance (AKR) leader Behgjet Pacolli has decided not to run for president of Kosovo, it has been announced. Three largest parties’ consensual candidate is Kosovo Police (KPS) Deputy Director Atifete Jahjaga. Pacolli withdraws Kosovo president bid The Kosovo government and the opposition have found a solution to the crisis which broke out after Constitutional Court’s decision to declare Pacolli’s appointment to office unconstitutional. The two parties of the ruling coalition and the largest opposition party, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), have agreed to nominate a neutral candidate who will be perform the presidential duties until constitutional and election reforms are finished. “We are nominating Atifete Jahjaga for candidate for Republic of Kosovo president and express full support of our parties to her candidacy. We are committed to putting the country’s interest above our personal interests,” Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said last night. “We agreed to immediately form a commission for presidential election reform that will draft necessary constitutional amendments and necessary legislation in order for the people to elect the president directly,” he explained. Pacolli told Radio Television Kosovo (RTK) that the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the LDK had reached an agreement thanks to his mediation and U.S. Ambassador to Pristina Christopher Dell and International Civilian Office (ICO) Head Pieter Feith’ efforts. The Constitutional Court of Kosovo decided last week that Pacolli’s appointment had been unconstitutional. Pacolli pointed out that new president’s mandate would last between six and nine months, which is how long it will take to change the Article 86 of the Kosovo Constitution that governs the election of president. According to him, the Kosovo citizens will elect the new president by a direct vote.
