Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Cedomir Jovanovic says that elections could be called after Serbia gets a positive opinion about the EU candidate status. He added that European Commission should give its opinion in mid-October. “Elections after Serbia gets candidate status” He said at the LDP Main Board that Serbia needed more radical political changes. Jovanovic added that the changes included speedy transition, change of the Kosovo policy and renouncing of irresponsible foreign policy. He explained that LDP’s vision of Serbia was a “society with a backbone and policy with a character”. The LDP leader pointed out that Serbia would remain on Europe’s margins if it did not join NATO. “The Russian prime minister (Vladimir Putin) was wrong when he spoke against the NATO accession. Serbia’s NATO accession is not a threat to Russian interests and the alliance’s expansion (is not a threat) to Russia. Serbia’s NATO membership means getting the country out of the isolation it is now in, surrounded by NATO and EU member states. Serbia will never be a parking lot for anybody’s missiles, or a platform from which somebody in the world will be attacked,” he pointed out. Jovanovic thinks that the Serbian government reshuffle has been unsuccessful and that it is only making the situation in the country more difficult. He added that the LDP was an alternative that should give new energy to the society. The LDP leader said that signatories of a petition, supporting Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica, spoke a lot about the situation in Serbia since they were sending a message that a person could not be held responsible for murder in Serbia. “What is so disputable in the state prosecutor’s announcement that he would talk to Kostunica? What has he done, so he is so afraid of the conversation now,” Jovanovic stated. The LDP will be the first Serbian party that will introduce direct elections for party leader, which means that all party members will be eligible to vote. Cedomir Jovanovic (Tanjug)
