International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Head Yukiya Amano warned that Japan was "still far from the end of the accident" that struck Fukushima nuclear plant. He added that nuclear emergency could go on for weeks, if not months, given the enormous damage to the plant. IAEA: Japan nuclear crisis far from over In a telephone interview for The New York Times Amano said that Japanese authorities were still unsure about whether the reactor cores and spent fuel were covered with the water needed to cool them. Amano said he saw a few "positive signs", with the restoration of some external electric power to the plant, but that more efforts should be done “to put an end to the accident,” The New York Times reported. His biggest concern was the spent fuel rods sitting in open cooling pools atop the reactor buildings, Amano said, adding that he was still uncertain that the efforts to spray seawater into the pools to keep the rods from bursting into flames had been successful. If the pools are filled with water but cooling systems are left unrepaired the temperature will go up raising the threat of new radioactive releases, Amano warned. (Tanjug)
