A part of the opposition, headed by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), held a rally Saturday in the northeastern Serbian town of Zrenjanin. SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic once again called for early parliamentary elections. Opposition holds rally, calls for elections At the rally dubbed “Changes for Serbia” Nikolic said it was high time the Serbian people ruled Serbia through their representatives, which was why SNS had started the rallies. "I will take the responsibility for what will happen, and it will be good for Serbia," the SNS leader said before several thousand members and supporters of the SNS, New Serbia (NS), the Socialist Movement and the Strength of Serbia Movement (PSS), many of whom came on buses from Novi Sad, Belgrade and other towns. “The SNS got the best acknowledgement of its policies during the visit of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who said that Serbia should be a link between the West and the East in the EU when he visited the Serbian parliament,” he pointed out. “That is our platform - both the East and the West,” said the SNS leader. SNS deputy leader Aleksandar Vucic assessed that the government was silencing the truth and "people are forbidden from saying what their think." New Serbia leader Velimir Ilic strongly criticized the government's performance. Reminding that the government promised highways and jobs for 400,000 people three years ago, he said that 300,000 people had been let go instead. Member of the SNS Presidency and SNS Zrenjanin town Committee Chairman Goran Knezevic, PSS leader Milanka Karic and Socialist Movement leader Aleksandar Vulin also spoke at the rally. The protest which lasted around 90 minutes ended without incidents, with sizeable police presence and video surveillance. Opposition supporters gather at the SNS rally in Belgrade (Tanjug, file)
