Serbian PM meets Turkish counterpart

Prime Ministers of Serbia and Turkey Mirko Cvetković and Recep Tayyip Erdogan meet in Ankara on Thursday.

Prime Ministers of Serbia and Turkey Mirko Cvetkovic and Recep Tayyip Erdogan meet in Ankara on Thursday. They agreed that the two countries were certain to strengthen bilateral relations in the coming period, especially the economic cooperation, said reports. Serbian PM meets Turkish counterpart Cvetkovic and Erdogan also singled out the transportation infrastructure sector as one of the areas where progress could be made soon. At a press conference after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara, Cvetkovic said that the general impression was that economic relations were good but that they could be much better considering the economic capacity of the country. Cvetkovic noted with regret that the trade exchange between the two countries was characterized by a large deficit on the part of Serbia, adding that, despite excellent political relations, there was no significant mutual investment. The Serbian prime minister, however, stressed that the need for cooperation between the two states was beyond the mere economic interests, as the good relations between Serbia and Turkey have a huge impact on the stability of the whole of southeastern Europe. Cvetkovic thanked Erdogan for the role Turkey had played in the evacuation of Serbian nationals from Libya. The Serbian prime minister also met with Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Mehmet Ali Sahin and laid wreaths on the tomb of the founder of the Turkish Republic and its first President Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Cvetkovic was welcomed in front of the Turkish government building with the highest state honors - salutes by the guard of honor and playing of the national anthem. Besides Prime Minister Cvetkovic, the political part of the Serbian delegation is comprised of Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Minister of Labor and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic, Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic and Minister without Portfolio Sulejman Ugljanin. The Serbian ministers met with their Turkish counterparts, during which two bilateral documents were signed: the Agreement on cooperation in the fight against serious crime, terrorism and organized crime and the Agreement on Cooperation in the field of environment, which were signed by the two countries' relevant ministers. In honor of the Serbian delegation, Prime Minister Erdogan also hosted a gala dinner. On Friday, the second day of the Serbian delegation's visit to Turkey, Prime Minister Cvetkovic will visit Istanbul, where he will open a business forum, which will gather together the most successful businessmen of Serbia and Turkey. After this, the prime minister of Serbia should be received by Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew in Fanar. Cvetkovic and Erdogan in Ankara (Tanjug)
