The EC report on the implementation of visa-free regime for the Western Balkans will be done in June, said EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom. She pointed out that visa liberalization for Western Balkan countries represented a very positive experience. Report on visa liberalization in June The Serbian government has organized a commission for monitoring of visa-free regime with the EU. The commission will propose measures that would contribute to reduction of the number of false asylum seekers. Malmstrom hopes that all observed abuses will be studied in order to avoid such situations in the future. She explained that the Netherlands and France’s request to start an emergency procedure for suspension of visa-free regime was a general proposal to freeze the regime in extraordinary situations. “When I have informed the Council of Ministers about the comprehensive assessment again in June, we will of course review a legal possibility whether we can do something like that, but its goal certainly isn’t to affect a specific country or a region. It was a general request to the EC to evaluate whether this could be launched, when and in what circumstances, and based on what legal ground,” the European commissioner stressed. French Ambassador to Serbia Xavier Deniau does not believe that the EU will revoke its decision on visa liberalization for the Serbian citizens. “I don’t believe that the decision will be revised and withdrawn, but that greatly depends on the Serbian authorities because, as you know, we’ve seen a large wave of false asylum seekers from the entire region in the last two years and that creates a certain number of problems for the EU. That’s why we are especially grateful to the Serbian authorities that are doing everything they can so the Serbian citizens who want to travel as tourists are not misused by their countrymen,” the French ambassador pointed out. According to Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, the commission’s main goal is to prevent the risks so that the issue of false asylum seekers would not jeopardize visa liberalization. Malmstrom has announced that the EC will form a joint mechanism together with Frontex, Europol, EU member states and the EU missions to the countries included in the visa liberalization in order to monitor visa liberalization.
