A group of some 50 citizens of Serbia has been attacked in their camp several hundred kilometers away from Tripoli, Libya. They today sent an email to B92 to appeal for help, and said their lives were in danger after a group of some 20 armed assailants attacked them and tried to steal their vehicles. Serbians attacked, stranded in Libya The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that all Serbian citizens currently in Libya were safe and well, and that it was in contact with the group that was attacked in their camp in the town of Ras Lanauf. Serbia has the aircraft ready and is awaiting permission from the Libyan government to proceed with evacuations, it was announced. The email sent earlier today said that six Serbians at the camp fought to save their vehicles, "as they are our only way back to Tripoli". Still, the attackers made away with one car "and a large sum of money", according to this. The group appear to be workers who said they were in contact with the Serbian embassy and the company in Tripoli, but added that "it appears no one is really aware of the situation we are in". The Serbians said that they feared for their lives, that the road to Surt was cut off, and that they expect another attack soon, when the robbers "will come back for what they didn't take". The group of Serbians have appealed for help from Serbia, asking the county to organize their rescue. Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said in Belgrade on Monday that his ministry is working to organize an evacuation of Serbians from Libya, which is faced with anti-government demonstrations, violence and armed groups attacking foreign companies. Jeremic said that while the evacuation is the absolute priority, it was difficult to organize with cut off telephone and internet lines in many parts of that country. The minister said that the embassy and the ministry are trying to determine the number of Serbians in Libya in order to obtain exit visas and permits for a special plane to land. Thus far between 600 and 700 Serbian citizens have contacted the embassy in Libya, but it is estimated that the number is higher.
