St. Sava Day celebrated in Belgrade

A ceremony on the occasion of St. Sava's Day was held in Belgrade on Thursday evening. The event was attended by top officials, dignitaries of traditional churches and religious communities, ambassadors, deans, and public figures. St. Sava Day celebrated in Belgrade The ceremony was organized by the Serbian Ministry of Education, and attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and Serbian Patriarch Irinej. The host of the ceremony, Serbian Education Minister Zarko Obradovic recalled that St. Sava was and still is our greatest educator, and that “he has determined our national identity”. In his address, Obradovic also noted that "Serbia's strategic priority is joining the EU family", adding that education in Serbia "should prepare future generations for living in the EU". St. Sava's Day was also marked in the SPC Diocese of Ras-Prizren and Kosovo and Metohija in the presence of Bishop Teodosije. January 27 commemorates the death of St. Sava (1174-1236), who was born Rastko Nemanjic - the youngest son of Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja, the first ruler of the Nemanjic dynasty. Beside his role as educator, St. Sava was the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church, its first patriarch, and the author of the medieval Serbian state's first constitution. (Beta)
