The EC could send an official letter to Belgrade on Friday, stating that dual excise taxes on oil derivates violate European regulations, B92 has learned. Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic told B92 that she expected the government to propose changes to the Excise Tax Law in order to harmonize it with the European standards. EC expected to find excise taxes violation of SAA Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic stated on Thursday that he had received unofficial information that the EC would take the stand that the amendments to the Excise Tax Law constitute a violation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA). “The EC will take the stand that if it wants SAA to be implemented, Serbia will have to give equal treatment to domestic and foreign providers of excise goods,” he told Serbian Radio and Television (RTS). In accordance with the amendments to the Excise Tax Law, which were proposed by the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and came in effect on January 1, the excise tax on imported fuel is higher than the excise tax on the oil produced by the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS). “The government will have to analyze the draft law since it was the government’s initiative to accept the amendments and to regulate the excise tax this way, and I expect amendments, i.e. draft amendments,” Djukic-Dejanovic pointed out. Excise tax on Euro premium gas was increased by RSD 4.8 per liter, on Eurodiesel by RSD 6.6 per liter and on unleaded BMB 95 by RSD 0.3 per liter.
