Chinese ambassador welcomes decision “When it comes to strategic partnership with Serbia, we always have an understanding for its vital interests and we respect every country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Chinese ambassador stated at a press conference following the signing of the agreement on the implementation of phase one in the Thermal Power Plant Kostolac B project. “On the other hand, we think that awarding of the Nobel Prize to the Chinese dissident has nothing to do with peace and human rights,” said Wei. He stressed that this year’s award to the Chinese dissident did not have anything to with peace just as Serbia knew that awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to former UN Special Envoy for Kosovo Martti Ahtisaari had nothing to do with human rights. “The Chinese dissident was requesting a change of political system in our country and we think that the Serbian people know best that awarding of the Nobel Prize to him has nothing to do with peace,” the Chinese ambassador explained. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Tuesday that China and 18 other countries had declined the invitation to attend the award ceremony on Friday. Aside from China, representatives of Russia, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Columbia, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Philippines, Egypt, Sudan, Ukraine, Cuba and Morocco will also boycott the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the Nobel Committee announced. Beijing has sent letters to foreign ministries and embassies, urging the diplomats not to come to the ceremony and warning of the consequences to be borne by those who supported Liu Xiaobo.
