Officials express gratitude to Uruguay

Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic met on Tuesday in Belgrade with Uruguay's Foreign Minister Luis Almagro. They discussed in Kosovo and the possibilities for enhancing the two countries' cooperation in several areas, particularly in the domain of economy. Officials express gratitude to Uruguay Cvetkovic thanked Almagro for Uruguay's principled stand on the protection of principles of the international law when it comes to Kosovo and Metohija, and pointed out that Belgrade is ready to launch a dialogue with Pristina with the aim of finding a compromise solution to the Kosovo issue. The two officials agreed that Serbia and Uruguay have achieved an exceptionally good police cooperation in the fight against international organised crime and terrorism. Cvetkovic and Almagro assessed that the two countries' economic cooperation does not meet its full potentials, and expressed interest in improving it, especially with regard to increasing trade and investment activities. The officials agreed that the two countries will work harder on improving their cooperation in the domains of science, culture and sports, the Serbian Government Media Office stated. Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and also met with his Uruguayan counterpart, and stated that the two countries' political relations were excellent. The Serbian minister thanked Uruguay for the regarding Serbia's efforts to preserve Kosovo and Metohija as its integral part. At a joint news conference following his meeting with Almagro, Jeremic pointed out that there are no open issues between the two countries, and reminded that this is the first time that a foreign minister of Uruguay has visited Serbia. The Serbian minister reiterated that EU membership remains Serbia's strategic priority, and at the same time underlined that recognition of Kosovo's independence can never be a matter of discussion. Almagro pointed out that Uruguay intends to maintain close relations with Serbia, and that it has shown understanding for Serbia's stand in the Kosovo's issue. "If we distance ourselves from the international law, we may find ourselves endangered by a similar problem some time soon," Almagro added. He noted that Serbia continued Yugoslavia's traditionally good relations with Uruguay, and expressed satisfaction over Serbia's European integrations.
