Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac has stated that the process of professionalization of the Serbian Army (VS) is in its final stage. He told B92 that there were many candidates who were interested in becoming professional soldiers, especially in southern Serbia. Defense minister: People believe in army The defense minister pointed out that it was envisaged that women would make 12 to 13 percent the total number of soldiers in the future professional army. He also added that it would be the first “historical generation” in which there would be women pilots, which was very common in the world. “Parallel with European integrations, Serbia awaits security integrations and participation of the VS in peacekeeping missions as a part of it, which is very important for Serbia both from political and security aspect,” he stressed. Sutanovac believes that taking part in peacekeeping missions is one more step in European integrations which also include defense integrations and “that’s something we want to take part in even before the official request arrives”. He has confirmed that an agreement on Serbia’s involvement in construction of defense industry factories in North Africa worth USD 400mn has come into effect. The defense minister, however, in accordance with the contract could not say which African countries those were. Commenting on the situation in domestic defense industry factories, he said that “they are still in trouble” but that they were slowly emerging from those problems. “If the state invested a little more into defense industry, the export would drastically increase,” he said and added that a blacksmith shop would open after 20 years in Valjevo-based Krusik factory and employ about 100 workers. Sutanovac said he was not surprised when recent survey, performed by Gallup and European Fund for the Balkans, showed that citizens had more confidence in the army than in the church, adding that such trend had been present since last year and that he was pleased it had finally been published. “People have faith in the army because we don’t have extraordinary events we had before, we have a professional army and don’t have corruption scandals,” the defense minister stressed and added that he often told the VS members that “now when they are popular they need to make more effort so they don’t ruin that.” Dragan Sutanovac
