Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic has said that the recommendations of the European Commission (EC) to Serbia have to be met by mid-2011. In an interview published by Vecernje Novosti today, Djelic said that he would hand the Government 2011 Action Plan for the EU to European Union Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele on November 24, when Fuele is scheduled to bring the EC questionnaire. Djelic: We are running new race The plan will be aimed at fulfilling the recommendations of the EC and accelerating the Government's reform potential, said Djelic, adding that he expects the same clear coordination and determination in the activities of all institutions demonstrated when “running the race” for the visa regime liberation. Asked which of the ten recommendations the government would mostly focus on, Djelic said: “Absolutely everything - introduction of a permanent membership in the High Judicial Council, processing individual complaints by judges, adoption of laws on financing of political parties and restitution, mandates of parliament members, economic reforms, amendments in the public procurement area, strengthening the status of regulatory bodies, resolving issues that burden the functioning of independent media, solving murders of journalists…” “It is of great importance to complete a part of the work in the first half of 2011, because the EC has to start drafting its opinion in May in order to complete it by October,” said Djelic. Responding to the question on whether something might disrupt the government's goal to gain the candidate status in late 2011, Djelic said that Serbia's success is possible but not guaranteed. Djelic believes that completing the cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) will be the biggest challenge for the government in the process of moving closer to the EU in the coming period. “Without that, we can hardly imagine that we would start accession talks with the EU,” Djelic said.
