Belgrade's Nikola Tesla International has a new building for the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA). Authorities said that the institution is now one of the best equipped of its kind in southeastern Europe. New SMATSA premises opened in Belgrade At the opening of the new regional air traffic control center, also attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic pointed out that the facility is equipped with modern technology and that it belongs to the category of 'smart' buildings. Cvetkovic noted that the opening of the new SMATSA premises coincided with the marking of the Centennial of aviation in Serbia and with the passing of the new air traffic law. Montenegrin Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunications Andrija Lompar expressed his conviction that the Agency will lead the way in air traffic control services in the region, both in terms of security and technology. Lompar recalled that SMATSA is in charge of the entire air space of Serbia and Montenegro, as well as of 55 percent of the Bosnia-Herzegovina air space, and expressed the expectation that the scope of the institution's services will be expanded. The building, located in close vicinity of the Belgrade airport, covers about 9,000 square meters of space, and the investment was worth around RSD 1.08bn. The solemn opening of the new SMATSA premises was also attended by Serbian Finance Minister Diana Dragutinovic and by twenty-something directors of air traffic control services from a number of European countries, the U.S. and Canada.
