Serbian parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic today in Belgrade met with a delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA). She informed them that the government has support of over 70 percent of Serbian citizens in overcoming all obstacles on the road to the EU, but that there is insufficient support for joining NATO. Speaker: No popular support for NATO "As far as Serbia joining NATO, there is not much support, which is quite logical considering the fact that the memories and the wounds of the 1999 bombing are still fresh," noted the speaker, who met with a delegation of the NATO PA Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security. The delegation was acquainted with Serbia's priorities in defense and security, relations with NATO and the EU, the situation in Kosovo and the Western Balkans, the speaker's office said in a statement. According to Djukic-Dejanovic, Serbia's priority is fighting corruption and crime, "the Interior Ministry is passing the test every day and the results are evident, as assessments from EU officials confirm," reads the statement. Commenting on the situation in Kosovo, she pointed out that most members of the Serbian parliament saw the passing of the joint Serbia-EU resolution in the UN General Assembly as an attempt to solve a series of issues through dialogue, in order to improve life for everyone in the province. The most important thing is to open dialogue as soon as possible and to tackle life issues, especially missing persons cases, Djukic-Dejanovic pointed out. Marc Angel of Luxembourg noted that a new strategic concept will be presented in the coming months, which should help "bring NATO closer to the Serbian people". The delegation also expressed interest in domestic priorities, Serbia's expectations regarding the situation in Kosovo, NATO and EU accession, as well as strengthening regional security, stability and prosperity.
