There has been a surge in number of new cancer cases, from 1,800 per year in the late nineties to almost 5,000 in 2010. Particularly worrying is the number of new patients under 40, while the number of female patients is on the rise as well. Number of cancer patients increasing Lung cancer is an insidious, vicious condition that lies behind more deaths than all other malignant diseases in men and women together. More than 1,600,000 people contract the lung cancer and 1,450,000 die from the disease every year worldwide. Surgical treatment gives the best chance to significantly extend the lives of patients, with early diagnosis being crucial to successful treatment. There were significant advancements in the treatment during the past decade. Head of Surgical Department at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic Dr Dragan Subotic says that, in comparison to ten years ago, there are at least 20-30% more patients eligible to undergo surgical treatment thanks to the developments in medical technology. If the disease is diagnosed while in the first stage, when it is still localized and there are no mediastinal metastases, the five-year survival rate is 85 percent. However, today's surgeons do not hesitate to operate on the patients with the advance stages of the disease, whenever possible. Dr Subotic added that non-surgical methods, such as chemo- and radiotherapy, are being increasingly employed to prepare and localize tumors so that these could eventually be surgically removed. The first results indicate there are significant improvements in the area. Dr Subotic concluded that, despite the poor working conditions, the Thoracic Surgery Department is successful in performing today's most complex surgical procedures.
