Women's awareness of their rights varies greatly in Serbia depending on whether they live in rural or urban environments, Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic says. Opening a regional ombudsman conference on gender equality and the implementation of Constitutional and legal provisions on gender equality on Mt. Fruska Gora in northern Serbia, Jankovic stressed the need to raise awareness about women's rights as a special category of human rights, which is undeveloped in Serbia. Gender equality - legislation and practice The ombudsman is supposed to deal with this issue in a reasoned and objective manner and use his authority to influence official institutions to consistently honor the principles of equal opportunity and gender equality, Jankovic said. Head of the UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women) office in Serbia Asya Varbanova pointed to the importance of conferences like this one, saying they build the foundation for regional dialogue on the protection of women's rights, since all participating countries are signatories of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Ombudsmen from seven Southeast European countries are taking part in the conference - Slovenia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia, as well as municipal and town ombudsmen from Serbia.
