A million dollars will be necessary for the defense of Hague indictee Ramush Haradinaj, an internet page dedicated to his defense says. Haradinaj’s party, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), has confirmed that they need USD 1mn, but that they were facing a dilemma on where to find the money. Million dollars for Haradinaj defense “The funds are necessary and it’s very urgent,” wrote Haradinaj’s defense attorneys. Pristina-based Albanian language daily Zeri has reported an AAK official’s statement that they could not comment on ways of providing the money at the moment. Haradinaj’s adviser Besnik Tahiri told the daily that AAK would be fully involved in the work of the defense team and that it would work together with Haradinaj’s family on providing any kind of logistics necessary for the court proceedings. According to Tahiri, their party still has not decided whether they will ask the Kosovo government to provide the funds to cover the costs of Haradinaj’s defense. The government has announced that it will discuss a possibility to help the defense if Haradinaj’s party asked for it. The ethnic Albanian former member of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) is facing a partial retrial at the Hague Tribunal. The original verdict found him not guilty on all counts of the indictment. He and two others were accused of committing war crimes against Serbs, Roma and ethnic Albanians in Kosovo in 1998. The new proceedings will start once the pre-trial procedure is finished and the last deadline for submission of final briefs of the prosecution and defense is December 14, Hague spokeswoman Nerma Jelacic told Tanjug. The Hague Tribunal Appeals Chamber overturned Haradinaj’s acquittal on July 21, explaining that the original trial was marked by intimidation of witnesses, and decided to retry him on six counts of the indictment.
