Boris Tadic said that there is a very favorable climate currently within the EU for forwarding Serbia's candidacy application to the European Commission. The president added that Serbia must never give up on its accession into the Union. "Good climate for EU progress" “Our aim is to soon gain the status of a candidate-state and a date for the opening of the negotiations on membership in the Union,” Tadic said. Tadic also said that Serbia has to carry out reforms fully, adopt necessary laws, and noted that there has been a slowing down of the adoption of laws by the parliament and government lately. Tadic said that it is very important for Serbia to receive the EC questionnaire right after gaining candidate status. “The EU membership itself brings enormous funds, which in Serbia's case would be about EUR 2bn a year in grants. For as long as we lag behind with the accession into the EU, we are losing those funds and no one has the right to slow down the process of accession,” the Serbian president said. He also said that Serbia's accession into the EU should be an indispensable goal for every future government. President Boris Tadic and First Lady Ruzica Djindjic (Tanjug)
