The Ministry for Science and Technological Development said in a statement on Friday that it would also propose to the UN and UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) that July 10 be declared the international day of science, said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic. Tesla's birthday declared Science Day "In the 21st century, Serbia must establish itself as a state that recognizes the significance of the knowledge economy and a country that will invest close to EUR 800mn in science and technology projects over the next four years," Djelic added. Djelic reminded that during the recent visit of the Croatian president to Serbia, Serbian President Boris Tadic proposed that the two countries "work together to make July 10 World Science Day." Tesla, an American scientist of Serbian descent who was born in the territory of today's Croatia, made his biggest contributions to science as the inventor of the rotating magnetic field, the induction motor, the polyphase system, the generator, and the complete system of production and distribution of electric energy. The International System of Units unit measuring magnetic induction was named the “tesla” in his honor. Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in the village of Smiljane in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire.
