The EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, has provided guarantees for the temporary release of Ramush Haradinaj. The Kosovo Albanian politician and former member of the so-called Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) is currently in Hague Tribunal's detention, awaiting a partial retrial. EULEX provides guarantees for Haradinaj He was accused of committing war crimes against Serbs, Romas and ethnic Albanians in Kosovo in 1998. Now EULEX accepted, "with certain conditions", the responsibility for his temorary release until the beginning of the retrial. EULEX stated that it accepts Haradinaj's temporarily release from custody, provided that during that period he does not leave the territories of Pristina and the village of Glodjane, and that any time he crosses from one municipality to another he informs EULEX officials about it at least 24 hours in advance. During his temporary freedom, Haradinaj will not be allowed to take any position in the Pristina authorities, or to participate in public political activities or make public statements, the EULEX statement reads. Haradinaj will still be president of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and perform administrative and organizational activities that are not public in nature. One month ago, the Hague Appeals Chamber granted the prosecution's appeal against the first instance acquittal and ordered a partial retrial. The Hague has not yet decided whether Haradinaj will be temporarily released from custody, as his lawyers requested.
