Serbian Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic signed Thursday contracts with representatives of 61 youth associations. The projects are worth RSD 57mn (some EUR 550,000) and have the goal of realizing youth-oriented projects. Contracts for youth-oriented projects On International Youth Day, the minister announced that August 12 marks the beginning of the UN's International Year of Youth. "The young people is Serbia from Presevo (south) to Subotica (north) will celebrate Youth Day in different ways," Samardzic-Markovic said and noted that youth in the town of Varvarin youth will celebrate with "games, karaoke and a concert". Those in Nis, however, will enjoy "releasing balloons on which they will write their wishes". UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia William Infante pointed to the importance of marking Youth Day and of the beginning of the International Year of Youth with the theme of Dialogue and Mutual Understanding, which is meant to encourage inter-ethnic dialogue and provide support to young people. The International Youth Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 1998, has been celebrated in Serbia since the Ministry of Youth and Sport was created in 2007.
