Washington-based analyst Obrad Kesic says that Serbia wants both EU and Kosovo, but could lose both. Kesic believes that Serbia is in a less favorable position following the ICJ advisory opinion on the Kosovo Albanian UDI, and that it is no longer being offered accelerated EU integration in exchange for cooperation on Kosovo. "Serbia without both EU and Kosovo" A clear message was sent to Belgrade after the ICJ opinion that there would be no turning back and that talks on concrete issues between Belgrade and Pristina should be started as soon as possible, he said. Kesic said that America could now pressure Belgrade with a demand to "bring to reason" Serbs in northern Kosovo, in order for them to accept the authority of the Kosovo Albanian government in Pristina. Washington sees signals coming out of Serbia in the past ten days as encouraging, and they believe that Belgrade will accept the reality in Kosovo, said the analyst. "Based on the debate in the Serbian parliament, and the statements of FM Vuk Jeremic that Serbia will not confront Brussels and Washington over Kosovo, there is belief that there has finally been progress in Serbia's position, and that the time is not right to seek a compromise solution regarding the status and partition, but to seize the moment and blackmail Serbia additionally with EU membership," explained Kesic.
