Croatia moves to extradite gangster

The extra-procedural council of the Zagreb County Court has issued Wednesday a non-binding verdict on Sretko Kalinić's extradition to Serbia.

The extra-procedural council of the Zagreb County Court has issued Wednesday a non-binding verdict on Sretko Kalinic's extradition to Serbia. This was announced by court's spokesman Kresimir Devcic on Wednesday. Croatia moves to extradite gangster "The court has issued a non-binding verdict which Kalinic can appeal within tree days, and the Suprime Court will rule on the possible appeal," Devcic told Croatia's Hina News Agency. Kalinic, sentenced in absentia to a total of 70 years in prison, was a fugitive for seven years and was hiding in Croatia when another Zemun Clan crime group member, Milos Simovic, shot and wounded him. Both were convicted for their involvement in the murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in March 2003. Sretko Kalinic was sentenced to 30 years in prison for this crime, and 40 years for 19 other murders, as well as kidnappings and acts of terrorism. The extradition of Sretko Kalinic, who has both Serbian and Croatian citizenship, would be the first time that Croatia extradites its citizen. Kalinic is seen in a Zagreb hospital (Tanjug, file)
