Twenty months after work began on the bridge across the Ada Ciganlija artificial lake, one shore has been connected with the central pylon bridge. A little over a year before the project's planned completion deadline, works across the Sava River will now continue to connect New Belgrade with the central column. Milestone in construction of new bridge This is expected to happen by the end of next year. The last end of the bridge across the Cukaricki River effluent has been connected with the central pylon this Monday. The bridge section is 200 meters long and weighs 20,000 tons. The Austrian Porr consortium working on the project said that the bridge would be finished by the end of 2011. Reports said that the structure, meant to help with the traffic congestion in the capital city, "will provide a great view of Belgrade", from about 200 meters over Ada Ciganlija river resort. Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, who toured the construction site today, said the city had "no clear" plans on how to counter possible traffic jams in the coming days and weeks, considering that the other bridge in the same area, Gazela, is under reconstruction. But Djilas said that the worst case scenario included the placing of a pontoon bridge to help alleviate the traffic across the Sava River. Djilas at the bridge today (Beta)
