Greece stated that it is ready to support every initiative that contributes to the process of reaching an agreement for stability in the Western Balkans. The statement comes in response to the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally proclaimed independence. Athens “ready to support stability in Balkans” “The Greek position is well known, and preserving peace, stability and cooperation in the Balkans is our key priority,” the Greek foreign ministry stated. The statement adds that these principles define the Greek stance and must be dominant now, since the ICJ’s decision has been made public. “We are strongly convinced that the universal respect and promotion of these principles is the safest road that leads to the European integration of the Western Balkans,” the statement adds. The Greek ministry states that the EU’s statement issued on Friday shows that good neighborly relations, regional cooperation and dialogue are the foundation that the EU was built upon. The Greek government has already begun consultations with its European partners and all other interested parties, the statement adds. “We are ready to take every initiative and contribute to the process that leads to finding a solution of agreement, geared towards stability in the Western Balkans,” the statement added. Greece is one of the five EU member-states that has not recognized Kosovo’s independence.
