Cyprus, Romania on Kosovo after ICJ ruling

The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday the country's position of respect to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia. "Cyprus would like to reiterate its position of principle on the issue of Kosovo and reaffirm its unwavering position of respect to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, which includes the Kosovo and Metohija province," the said the statement. "We consider this long legal process to be a huge challenge in international law in which Cyprus took part," the statement reads. Cyprus is one of the five EU member states that have not recognized the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence made in early 2008. Romania reiterates Kosovo position Romania confirmed on Friday its official position that it does not recognize Kosovo's unilaterally proclaimed independence, and called on reopening of the dialog between Belgrade and Pristina. "The Romanian Foreign Ministry is confirming the position that it has been unequivocally expressing over the last few years, which consists of not recognizing Kosovo as a state," it was stated in the ministry's press release. "Confirming the deep and unchanged commitment to international law and respect for the international court", Bucharest stated that the ICJ opinion was given "exclusively on the legitimacy of the self-declared independence, and is not related to any legal consequences that could arise if the so-called new state is formed". The ministry has called for renewed dialog between Belgrade and Pristina in order to find a solution that would suit the interests of both parties and contribute to strengthening of long-term stability in Europe.
