The Russian government has allocated USD 2mn for the reconstruction of Orthodox Serb churches and monasteries in Kosovo, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The Russian government has allocated USD 2mn for the reconstruction of Orthodox Serb churches and monasteries in Kosovo, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Russia has make the donation via UNESCO, and the reconstruction works will be carried out 2010 and 2011. Russia finances repair of Serb shrines in Kosovo The announcement points out that the decision was made in the spirit of the UN Resolution 1244 which defines the post-199 war status of Kosovo, and as a part of a project launched by UNESCO aiming to give humanitarian help to Serbia for reconstruction and preservation of its cultural monuments which had been "damaged during military actions". The Serb Orthodox churches in Kosovo were targeted by ethnic Albanians during the 1999 war, and also during the anti-Serb violence in 2004. Four Serb Orthodox shrines in the province which are included into the UNESCO World Heritage List – the Pec Patriarchate, monasteries of Decani and Gracanica, and the Church of Bogorodica Ljeviska will benefit from the donation. This will also be Russia’s contribution to the implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention aiming to help preserve unique monuments of the Orthodox Christian culture, which have a historical importance for the entire international community, the official announcement from Moscow said.
