Radical ethnic Albanian leader released

Self-Determination Movement's Albin Kurti was convicted and sentenced to nine months of prison and then promptly released. The reason is that he had already spent 11 months in prison during 2007. Radical ethnic Albanian leader released Kurti, who heads the radical ethnic Albanian movement, was convicted for inciting violence during protesting in Kosovo in which two people were killed and 80 were injured. This trial was postponed nine times because he refused to appear in court. He was arrested on June 12, after a serious of unsuccessful attempts to put him in custody. Kurti refused to answer to any question at first, stating that he “does not recognize” the EULEX trial chamber. “I did not appear at the hearings because I do not recognize EULEX and because this process is politically motivated. The restart of the case confirmed that EULEX is an undemocratic authority and that this is an unjust trial chamber,” Kurti said later. He said that he would have attended the hearings if the trial chamber was made up of “domestic judges” and if Kosovo was “freed of international rule”. Kurti’s Self-Determination Movement stated earlier that the arrest and trail were consequences of the ruling government’s fear of the fact that “the movement has decided to participate in elections next year”.
