The resignation of the U.S. ICJ judge won't affect the stance of the court on the legality of Kosovo’s independence, say Albanian language dailies in Pristina. Kosovo Albanian institutions are preparing a new strategy for securing new recognitions immediately following the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), according to these reports. Intl. Court of Justice judge quits American judge Thomas Buergenthal handed in his resignation on Friday, but the resignation would not take effect until September, so it is not expected to influence the ICJ opinion. Pristina media reminded that this is the second resignation in the ICJ since it began discussing the Kosovo issue. Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, as well as other Kosovo politicians, have stated that they expect new recognitions immediately after the court’s opinion is made public. Dailies state that “international friends of Kosovo” are also working on lobbying for new recognitions, adding that former American president Bill Clinton, former Kosovo status envoy Martti Ahtisaari and other prominent international officials are helping in the efforts for gaining more recognitions. The highest UN court is deliberating whether the February 2008 Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration of independence was legal under international law.
