Serbia requests Kalinić extradition

The Justice Ministry has sent a request to Croatia for the extradition of Sretko Kalinić to Serbia, Minister Snežana Malović said.

The Justice Ministry has sent a request to Croatia for the extradition of Sretko Kalinic to Serbia, Minister Snezana Malovic said. Kalinic was found guilty in a Serbian court of participating in the assassination of prime minister Zoran Djindjic as a member of the Zemun Clan criminal group. He was also tried in absentia for 19 other murders, and sentenced to a total of 70 years in prison. Serbia requests Kalinic extradition Kalinic, who was wounded in Croatia earlier this week, holds a Croatian passport, and under that country's legislation cannot be extradited. Croatia also does not recognize the verdicts and sentences passed against him in Serbia. Malovic said that the Serbian and Croatian justice ministries were working on creating an agreement for extradition when organized crime is in question. “I expect that the agreement will be signed as soon as Croatia makes the constitutional changes needed to enable it,” Malovic said. She said that cooperation between the two ministries was at a very high level, because both countries are dedicated to improving and strengthening bilateral and regional cooperation in the fight against organized crime. “A clear political will exist in Serbia and Croatia to thwart organized crime. Our joint fight against organized crime will contribute to regional stability and security, which is of great importance in the further develop and European perspective of the Western Balkans,” Malovic added.
