Citizens' Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic says that free media represent a guarantee of timely, complete and objective reporting. His comments came as World Press Freedom Day is marked today globally. World Press Freedom Day marked In Serbia, Jankovic said, solving of cases of murder and attempted murder of journalists, protection and support for investigative reporting, and creating of fair conditions for competition on all levels of the media market were of paramount importance. The ombudsman also spoke in favor of protecting journalists' “economic and social rights”. “Journalist associations will contribute to the freedom of the media if their ethic councils are additionally confirmed as places where the difference between freedom and abuse is made in the best and quickest manner,” Jankovic wrote in a statement. He also expressed hope that the Constitutional Court of Serbia will soon make a decision on his proposal to evaluate the legality under the Constitution of some parts of the current media law. Meanwhile, Culture Minister Nebojsa Bradic criticized what he saw as sensationalist reporting, that caters to the “lowest tastes”, and in the process “depletes the language”. Bradic also said he regretted the fact media did not focus enough on culture, and said the sum of these practices amounted to an “attack” on the public, and abuse of the freedom of expression, “with immeasurable negative consequences”. The Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) and the Union of Journalists of Serbia will today in Belgrade mark the day with a campaign dubbed, “Five minutes of deafening silence”.
