Foreign Ministry advisor Zdravko Ponos said that the work of the commission for confirming borders between Serbia and Croatia is “very significant.” He told B92 that the meeting held on Thursday between Serbian and Croatian officials was very tolerant, with both sides taking time to listen to the arguments of the other side. Talks on confirming Serbo-Croat borders It was concluded at the meeting that some of the inter-republic border between the two countries have been confirmed, which represents the basis for confirming the borders in accordance with the protocol from 2002 on the charters for defining the borders, Ponos said. Ponos also said that some of the borders have been confirmed, and that there would be no problems in reaching an agreement on them. He said that the strip of land following the Danube River from Backa Palanka to the meeting of borders between Croatia, Serbia and Hungary would have to be discussed, since there are discrepancies as to where the borders are located in this region. “We agreed that expert teams would get together at the next commission meeting to exchange arguments and differing claims on the borders,” he said. Ponos said that the next meeting is scheduled for early June. He said that one of the arguments Serbia has is the law for confirming the borders of the autonomous province of Vojvodina from 1945, which defined the province’s borders with Croatia at the center of the Danube’s fairway. According to the given arguments, the Croatian territory would be expanded with some parts of the left coast of the Danube, but Serbia would also enter into the right coast of the river, so the borders would move in a “zigzag” direction, Ponos said. On the argument from the municipalities of Sombor and Apatin, located on the territory in question, that the forests in the area are important economically to the municipalities because of hunting and fishing tourism, Ponos said “there is no part of the country that is unimportant.” “This commission does not have the mandate to deem something unimportant, but to confirm the border,” he said. He said that there would be an opportunity for an exchange of territory later if interest exists in such an action for the local community and their ability to function properly. The meeting of the border commission on Thursday was the first of its kind in seven years.
