A hooligan who in late 2007 attempted to murder an on-duty police officer during a football game has been sentenced to ten years in jail. The Belgrade Higher Court found Uros Misic guilty and sent him to prison for the minimum term under the law on charges of aggravated attempted murder. Hooligan sentenced to 10 years Previously, Misic was found guilty and also sentenced to ten years, but the Supreme Court in March 2009 ordered a retrial. Misic assaulted MUP Gendarmerie inspector Nebojsa Trajkovic at the Red Star FC stadium stands in Belgrade on December 2, 2007, trying to force a lit flare down his victim's throat. The prosecution qualified this as attempted murder, but Misic's defense maintained that their client “only made a few movements with the flare, without pushing it in the mouth, which was clear from the (security) video”. The defense also insisted there was no evidence to prove that the assault was in fact an attempted murder. Trajkovic sustained serious injuries in the incident, and was found to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Ahead of the sentencing today, Misic, who was 18 years old at the time of the incident, said he was “carried away by his youth”, and apologized for the crime. He also pleaded with the court to “allow him to carry on with his life”. Misic, left, is seen attacking his victim (FoNet, file)
