Sarajevo Mayor Alija Behmen has requested that a planned commemoration of the Dobrovoljacka Street massacre be prohibited. The mayor sent an urgent request to the Interior Ministry of the Sarajevo Canton, demanding a ban of the gathering which has been announced by a subcommittee set up to mark the anniversary Mayor wants massacre commemoration banned A retreating convoy of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) soldiers was attacked in this Sarajevo street in May 1992, resulting in dozens of deaths and woundings. Former Muslim member of the Bosnian wartime presidency Ejup Ganic has been indicted in Serbia for this war crime, and is currently awaiting a decision of a British court on the extradition demand filed by Belgrade. Earlier, the subcommittee's chairwoman Branka Sljivaru announced that 18 years since the crime took place would be marked on Monday, May 3, in Sarajevo. Sljivaru said that representatives of the Interior Ministry of the Sarajevo Canton had given a positive response to the Republic of Srpska’s request to hold the commemoration.

Mayor wants massacre commemoration banned

A retreating convoy of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) soldiers was attacked in this Sarajevo street in May 1992, resulting in dozens of deaths and woundings.

Former Muslim member of the Bosnian wartime presidency Ejup Ganić has been indicted in Serbia for this war crime, and is currently awaiting a decision of a British court on the extradition demand filed by Belgrade.

Earlier, the subcommittee's chairwoman Branka Šljivaru announced that 18 years since the crime took place would be marked on Monday, May 3, in Sarajevo.

Šljivaru said that representatives of the Interior Ministry of the Sarajevo Canton had given a positive response to the Republic of Srpska’s request to hold the commemoration.
