The new Avala Tower, one of the symbols of Belgrade destroyed in the 1999 NATO bombing, opened on April 21. The structure was rebuilt in the same spot on the Avala Hill outside of Belgrade. Belgrade mayor opens new Avala Tower The new tower is 204.5 meters high, a meter taller than the old one. The tower was opened by Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, who said, "I wish that no other mayor will ever have to open the Avala Tower again." "We have it back, now let us keep it," Djilas said, adding that the tower should not be a message to the past, but rather a message for the future. The opening ceremony was attended by nearly all top state officials, representatives of Belgrade, various churches and religious communities, as well as a number of public figures. (Beta)
