European Parliament rapporteur for Montenegro Charles Tannock said that Montenegro could become a candidate for EU membership by the end of the year. First, there would be a report on Montenegro’s readiness to become an EU member-stated, which Tannock said would be given in October. “Montenegro candidate by end of year” “There has not been a formal decision yet, but I presume that I’ll file the report when the European Commission gives its opinion on the answers submitted by the Montenegrin government to the questionnaire it received,” he said. “I understand that opinion of the European Commission could be given in the fall, so I would have a draft of my report ready in October,” Tannock told Podgorica daily Dan. He said that it was possible that Montenegro would receive candidate status before year’s end. “I would not dismiss that possibility, because I expect a positive opinion from the European Commission, and mine will be as well, if the information I have is correct. Unavoidably, there can be a hold up sometimes, and then Montenegro would receive candidate status in early 2011, but the goal of Montenegro becoming a candidate for EU accession by the end of this year, is definitely worth working towards,” Tannock said.
