The Serbian parliament is today debating a draft law on protection of population from exposure to tobacco smoke and another, on medicines and medical devices. Elaborating on the draft, Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic stated that, according to the data from 2006, 33 percent of men and 29 percent of women smoked on a daily basis or occasionally, and that the figures have been reduced since. Parliament continues session The proposed law envisages a smoking ban in public transportation and in the workplace, while restaurants will be exempt, and smoking wil be allowed there depending on the size of the premises. Fines envisaged by the draft range from RSD 5,000 to RSD 1mn. At the beginning of the session, opposition MPs asked the government about the upcoming provatization of Telekom Srbija, and those from the past, including the sale of the Port of Belgrade company and the Vecernje Novosti company, as well as regarding the investigation against alleged drug smuggler Darko Saric. Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) MPs spoke about Arandjelovac, one of the oldest spas in Serbia, and noted that it had lost its status, and asked Economy and Regional Development Minister Mladjan Dinkic when the town can expect to have its status of a spa reinstated. Serb Radical Party (SRS) MPs once again requested posed questions regarding the “transformation” of Vecernje Novosti, and whether it was true that there was a sum of EUR 42mn on the account of the Port of Belgrade on the day of the privatization. New Serbia (NS) representatives asked which experts had participated in the making of a feasibility study on the sale of Telekom Srbija, and wanted to know why landline phone fees increased several times. Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) MPs asked Public Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljevic whether connections with civil servants and officials are being investigated as a part of the Saric case. The opposition also expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that the government was yet to provide answers to the questions asked during previous parliament sessions.
