Radovan Jelasic, who this week announced his resignation as NBS governor, is yet to explain the reasons behind his move. Jelasic, who will remain at the helm of Serbia's central bank until his successor has been elected, claims he does not already have a new job lined up. Jelasic on NBS resignation He still does not wish to state any details concerning his decision, but has repeated that the reasons are personal. Taking part in the Managers Forum, in a less formal conversation, Jelasic said that Serbia needed to be careful about current spending and that the country must not spend more that it was earning. “I understand that it is impossible to explain in this country that somebody is leaving for personal reasons, just as it is impossible to explain that I don’t already have an agreed job, but here, I swear,” the outgoing governor stated. He also said that he is yet to look for a new job, and that nobody from the government had spoken to him about new job possibilities. At the same forum in Belgrade on Thursday, representatives of the Serbian Association of Managers requested from Jelasic to reveal why he decided to resign, saying that he must show responsibility "like he has done so far and tell the public what awaits it". “I just hope that the central bank will in the future say what is going on, regardless of whether it's difficult or unpopular. This presentation tried to show what will be happening in the next period and what the challenges are, that’s primarily current spending and what will happen if we were to spend more,” he pointed out. Jelasic denied that he had resigned because of the government’s decision to approve subsidized consumer loans “was the straw that broke the camel's back”, stating that loans made only 2.5 percent of the existing credit mass. He confirmed that Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic had talked to him about the candidates to succeed him, but he did not wish to reveal any details of that conversation. The outgoing governor was consistent in warnings that excessive public spending could lead Serbia to a “Greek scenario”. "It is especially important to invest funds and not let them go to current spending," Jelasic concluded. Radovan Jelasic (Tanjug, file)
