European Commission Delegation Chief in Belgrade Vincent Degert supports the initiative for a regional commission for confirming facts about war crimes (REKOM). The initiative was proposed by a number of non-governmental organizations from countries of the former Yugoslavia. EC official supports war crimes commission initiative “I will not give up, not for myself or my son who was killed, or any other woman that cannot speak, those that were raped in the presence of their parents and children, those that cannot talk because they were raped while being threatened with a weapon,” said Senka Agic, who spent 13 months imprisoned during the war in Bosnia and was raped several times. Her story is one of many of brutal war crimes committed on the territory of the former Yugoslavia during the war. Degert said that in order to confirm all facts regarding these crimes, a regional approach must be taken in investigating and facing the past. He said that cooperation with the Hague Tribunal is important in strengthening the capacities of local prosecutions in processing war crimes. “This is a chance for victims to say how much they suffered. Avoiding revisionism is also a part of the process that must be confirmed,” Degert said. Humanitarian Law Center Director Natasa Kandic said that such a committee has only had declarative support from governments, and that once such a committee is proposed to local parliaments, NGOs will be able to see how much support exists for such an idea. The sixth forum of the coalition for support for REKOM featured officials from 300 NGOs from the former Yugoslavia. The coalition is made up of 600 NGOs and individuals from the region.
