A fire that broke out in an elementary school in Novi Pazar last night damaged the roof and several classrooms. No casualties were reported from the southwestern Serbian town. The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is under way. But Novi Pazar Mayor Meho Mahmutovic said that “it is obvious that someone went into the principal’s office, professionally removed the hard drive and disabled video-surveillance, and then set the school on fire.” The mayor added that he expected an "adequate response from police and punishment for the perpetrator". The mayor stressed that this was not the first case of breaking into schools but that it was the first time that it had been set on fire, and that the case was also "about the moral damage". “It’s much cheaper to have a guard in the future beside the video-surveillance and in this way provide an increased security system,” Mahmutovic suggested. The mayor and the school Principal Nusret Zukovic visited the scene. It was also discovered that 15 class records of seventh and eighth grade were missing from the school.
