The opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) spoke on Monday against Serbia's possible participation in a conference planned in Slovenian. Serbia’s acceptance to participate in the conference in Brdo pri Kranju without a name would represent a "recognition of independent Kosovo of its own kind". DSS against Slovenia conference DSS Spokesman Petar Petkovic told a news conference that Serbia would recognize Kosovo through its “Europe has no alternative” policy, and that it had succumbed to pressures of the EU member states to establish "good neighborly relations with Kosovo", by agreeing to participate in the gathering planned for March 20. “We have come to a hopeless situation with the ‘Europe has no alternative’ policy, because we are supposed to go to an international conference without a name instead of defending the state policy, and saying loud and clear that Kosovo is not Serbia’s neighbor but its integral part,” he said. According to him, the meeting in Slovenia will be an introduction to a conference which should be held at the EU ministerial level in June in Sarajevo, where Serbia should already "establish good neighborly relations with Kosovo". The DSS spokesman stressed that "good neighborly relations with Kosovo" in fact “meant a recognition of Kosovo independence, although it did not need to be said publicly” and emphasized that the “Europe has no alternative” policy had brought Serbia to a "complete disaster" regarding the defense of Kosovo. “We call upon authorities to go back to the state policy, the one which was carried out when DSS was in power, because only that way we can keep Serbia whole and go out to international conferences with dignity, with clear confidence in the full integrity of the Serbian state,” Petkovic concluded.
