A Serbian police (MUP) officer has been shot and killed while on duty near the town of Tutin, in the country's southwestern area of Sandzak. The policeman has been named as 30-year-old Zeljko Zecevic. Sandzak: On-duty policeman killed According to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, the killer has been identified as Fahrudin Mavric, and he is currently on the run. The incident happened after a police patrol intervened during a tavern brawl in the village of Jezgrovice. Two participants in the fight, Mavrovic being one of them, were taken outside, but shortly afterwards they encountered police again as they caused a traffic accident. After this, they were detained. As officers and the pair of suspects were driving toward the police station, Mavric took Zecevic's service pistol, shot him in the back, and escaped from the vehicle. The police officer died shortly afterwards on the way to the hospital. Dacic said that police were searching for the killer, and that MUP will "in the coming days do everything to make sure that this event does not have its consequences on the overall stability of the region, considering that it has a mixed population." The minister was referring to the fact Sandzak is inhabited by Muslims and Serbs. Dacic also noted that some 1,000 police officers died while on-duty in the past 20 years, and added that perpetrators of these crimes must be punished more severely. (Tanjug)

The incident happened after a police patrol intervened during a tavern brawl in the village of Jezgroviće. Two participants in the fight, Mavrović being one of them, were taken outside, but shortly afterwards they encountered police again as they caused a traffic accident.

After this, they were detained. As officers and the pair of suspects were driving toward the police station, Mavrić took Zečević's service pistol, shot him in the back, and escaped from the vehicle.

The police officer died shortly afterwards on the way to the hospital.
