He told daily Vecernje Novosti that he will be in Belgrade on Monday to offer France’s help in the European integration of Serbia. Kouchner: Kosovo not condition for EU He added that after the successful abolishment of the visa regime and the implementation of the interim trade agreement, “progress must be made towards gaining candidate status and opening the membership negotiations.” He said that the Serbian government was informed that “the recognition of Kosovo’s independence is not among the conditions that must be fulfilled for joining the EU.” “But we have never hidden that, because we speak openly with our friends. Serbia, like any other candidate country, must solve its own problems with its neighbors, will all of its neighbors, before it enters the EU,” he said. He said that he is content that the EU member-states have recognized Serbia’s efforts in European integration, but warned that “there is a long road that must be walked in order to arrive at full cooperation with the Tribunal.” Kouchner said that Serbia and the countries of the region have significantly progressed over the last several months. “The sooner difficult reforms are implemented, which are useful for European integration, the sooner you will enter the EU. The decisiveness of your government is well known. I trust that it will double its efforts and achieve integration into the European family. We will be there to help, in every phase, until the negotiations are completed,” Kouchner said.
