Bozidar Djelic spoke in favor of the strengthening of all forms of cooperation between the countries of the Danube region, especially in the field of economy. Addressing the Danube Summit in Budapest, Hungary, organized by the European Commission and the Hungarian government in Budapest, Serbia's deputy PM highlighted the importance of the Danube as a river that connects and offers the possibility of speedy economic development along its entire flow, the government posted on its website. Deputy PM on cooperation between Danube countries He underscored that Serbia completely supports the crafting of a Danube region strategy, which will incorporate all European values, and recalled that Serbia has taken an active part in the creation of the Budapest Declaration and the inter-ministerial working group for cooperation with the EU on the issue of the Danube. Apart from the three existing pillars of the strategy, Serbia is proposing the adoption of two more - establishing a system of safe navigation on the Danube and the creation of a knowledge-based economy, through cooperation between universities and scientific institutes, Djelic said. He reiterated that economic development founded on knowledge was the conclusion arrived at during a meeting of university presidents from the Danube region, which took place in Novi Sad between Feb. 4 and 6. The two-day event was opened by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Balazs and the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Jozsef Palinkas. Participants were then greeted by Budapest Mayor Gabor Demsky, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn and Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai.
